Why Set Goals?

Goal setting is the powerful process of taking your dreams, hopes, and plans and putting it into a workable plan. With a few of our motivational tools, we will guide you through the process of:

Dreaming + Motivation + Removing Distractions =
Living Your Ideal Life

By following this process it allows you to choose where you want to go, what you want to do, how you are going to get there, find what motivates you, following through on your personal plan, remove everything that is stopping you from achieving it, so that you can live your ideal life.

Step 1: Setting Your Personal Goals:

To go forward we must work from the top down, then live from the bottom up – stick with me, it will make sense very soon!

First, we need to create the “Big Picture.”

  1. What do you want to do with your life?
  2. Where do you want to be in 5 years?
  3. Where do you want to be in 10 years?
  4. What does retirement look like to you?

By looking at the big picture of what you want to do with your life, than we can break those down in to bite size goals so you can start working towards your future.

Next, write out where you were 5 years ago and 10 years ago, where you are now, and where you want to be in 5 years, 10 years, and 20 years in each of the categories below:

Physically:

Emotionally:

Health:

Appearance:

Relationships:

Living environment:

Pleasure:

Attitude:

Socially:

Career:

Education:

Financially:

Spiritually:

Although you will be spending a majority of time on this section, know that the time you spend is the best thing you can do for yourself.

Spend some time looking over your answers. Is there anything that surprised you? Make note of all the accomplishments you’ve done over the last 5 – 10 years.

Step 2: Goals and Tremendous Joy

Next, what are a few areas you want to focus on the most? Which ones would you like to accomplish at the end of the year? Which one of these would you experience tremendous joy and excitement if you accomplished it at the end of the year?

Now, take the next 5 minutes and write a paragraph or two why you are absolutely committed to achieving this or these goals? Dreams and goals are only accomplished if we have an absolute compelling reason for doing it. If we do something because our spouse or parents wants us to do something, in all likelihood it won’t happen. For us to see our goals come to fruition we must have a very strong reason for it.

With that in mind, why is it so important to you? Write a few sentences what you will miss out on if you don’t do it. What will gain from achieving it? What losses will you experience from it? Why is it important to you? Once you’ve looked back over your answers, ask yourself if these are strong enough and compelling enough reasons. If not, spend some more time thinking about it. Keep doing it until you feel you’ve created a strong and convincing reason to do it.

Once you have your solid reasons to making your dreams a reality, take time to set smaller goals.

Step 3: Small Steps – Big Rewards

With your lifetime goals (5, 10, and 20 year goals) in hand it’s time to set smaller goals.

Although you may not know exactly how you will do all of the planning at this time, start by writing out the things you know what you need to do.

For example, if you want to be a nurse, you will have to do a few things to accomplish this goal. First you would need to find a school, money for school, loans, find out if there are any prerequisites, etc.

With the end in mind (5, 10, 20 year goal), Write out what you will need to do in the next year to move forward towards your lifetime goals.

Next create a 6 month plan, a 3 month plan, a 1 month plan, weekly goals and daily to-do-list.

Once those are done, create in your mind a mental picture of yourself doing what you want to achieve in your lifetime. For example, if you wanted to be a nurse, imagine yourself dressed in scrubs, caring for a patient. By continually seeing yourself as you want to be, it starts the ball rolling towards your beautiful future.

Lastly, as you plan your daily to-do-list, and weekly and monthly calendar ask yourself: does this move me closer to my dreams or further away? If not, remove it.

Tip:
Don’t forget to review your weekly, monthly, yearly, and lifetime goals each week to keep it fresh in your mind.
